Yajaira Saavedra, Youth Activist, Says A Real Life Nightmare May Keep Her From Her Dreams
For most of her life, Yajaira Saavedra thought that her hazy memory of crawling through a hole in a chain linked fence in the Texas desert was merely a childhood nightmare. But a few years ago, Saavedra, now 23, found out that she entered the United States illegally with her parents and little brother when she was just four years old. Now, she says, the real life nightmare may keep her from her dreams. Although Yajaira graduated from CUNY with a degree in marketing last year, unlike most of her classmates, she won't be able to obtain most paying jobs in the field due to her undocumented status. Arizona Lawmaker Proposes ‘White Appreciation Day’
On the House floor Monday, state Representative Cecil Ash (R-Arizona), suggested that Arizona create a White Appreciation Day when White Americans are no longer the majority in the United States, reports CBS5AZ.com. Ash made the oddly not surprising statement — as it’s coming from the land of Governor Jan Brewer, revisionist history books and the most repellant immigration laws in the nation — after State Rep. Richard Miranda voiced his support for a Latino Appreciation Day: “I wanted to speak to you all about Latino Americans here in Arizona,” said Rep. Miranda on the House floor. Latinos, hit hard by job losses, are making strong comeback
After scraping by on handyman jobs for a year, Bert Qintana figured he'd have to leave his wife and teenage son at their home near Taos, N.M., and find work elsewhere. Then Qintana got a call last month from Chevron Mining, which runs a mine 20 miles away. Would he be interested in hauling muck from the molybdenum mine for $17.05 an hour? He leaped at the offer. "Thank God," said Qintana, 45, a Latino who had worked as a general contractor. "I was able to hang in there and not have to move." About a dozen other workers, most of them Latino, also were hired. Like Qintana, many Latinos with ties to the home building industry got slammed by the recession, which wiped out about 2 million construction jobs.
