Review: Pepsi Musica Fan Jam entertains Super Bowl 2012 crowd, even without Omar

Mexican recording artist Alejandra Guzman performed Wednesday night at the Pepsi Musica Univision stage at the Indiana Convention Center.

Despite an unexpected cancellation by Latin music star Don Omar, two Spanish-language acts entertained an Indiana Convention Center crowd on Wednesday night.

Excerpts from the Super Bowl-themed Pepsi Musica Fan Jam will be broadcast Saturday night on the Univision cable TV network.

Because of Omar's absence, the only acts to appear were Alejandra Guzman, billed as Mexico's "queen of rock," and Norteno musician Larry Hernandez.

Organizers cited no reason for Omar's late-breaking cancellation.

Mercedes Aguirre, a backstage correspondent for Univision, said "some drama" was at the heart of the pre-show strife. Aguirre declined to elaborate.

Rosie Pearson, a journalist with HBO Latino America, said Omar's no-show was disappointing.

Pearson said she spoke with a delegation of Brazilian journalists who flew to Indianapolis for the chance to cover Omar. After hearing of the altered program, they left before the concert began.

Pepsi Musica Fan Jam was presented on "The Field" at the NFL Experience, with black drapes surrounding the space and providing a barrier to NFL Experience attendees.

Based in Mexico City, Univision staffer Aguirre said Guzman's musical style is popular in the central part of the country.

When posing for media photographs before the show, Guzman instructed her accompanying band -- Moderatto, known for its glam-rock hair and makeup -- to say, "Sex!" and "Go Giants!" as images were made.

Guzman, sporting a neck tattoo and showgirl wings fashioned from red and black feathers, embraced the Super Bowl spirit by wearing a New England Patriots helmet during one song (a guitarist wore a New York Giants helmet, in the interest of balance).

Hernandez closed the show with Sousaphone-fueled Norteno tunes.

Indianapolis resident Carmen Trello gave high marks to Pepsi Musica Fan Jam as a rare arena-style Spanish-language concert in the Circle City.

"Everybody got together," said Trello, who had front-row seats with her husband, Rigo Trello, and her sister-in-law, also named Carmen Trello. "We waited for two hours on the second floor (of the convention center) before they let us in. But the wait was worth it. The concert is great."
