The Bulldogs also capped a perfect 10-0 regular season.</p><p>This was the completion of a suspended game from September with DeLand leading 14-0. The first team All-American and Naismith Trophy winner JuJu Watkins received the John R. Wooden Award in April of this year, beating out UConn's Paige Bueckers by an impressive 46 votes. The junior point guard had a stellar 2024-25 season that ended abruptly after suffering a torn ACL during the second round of the NCAA tournament. </p><p>In the 2024-25 season, which was a historic one to say the least, Watkins averaged 23.6 points and dished out 3.4 assists a game with 6.8 rebounds. Among the many other accolades she achieved that season, her full focus for now will be on recovery. </p><p>"I'm incredibly thankful for my family, teammates, coaches, the USC training personnel, Jason, Shane and everyone who's continued to support me every day through this journey," Watkins said when she announced that she will forgo the 2025-26 season to fully focus on recovering her knee. "I'm excited to keep putting in work to come back even stronger." </p><p>With Watkins' absence beginning tonight as the Women of Troy open up their season against the New Mexico Aggies at the Galen Center, there are still high expectations for this Trojan team coming off a historic season in which they recorded their first 30-win season since 1985. With players like Kennedy Smith and Jazzy Davidson at the helm for the foreseeable future, the Trojans have earned themselves a golden opportunity to capitalize on their previous success </p><div class="embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9"></div><p><br></p><p><br></p>)

![](/<figure><img src="https://media.zenfs.com/en/afp.com/9a9ed86d2ac4e0c32b0a35b0ee2fe636" data-uuid="d5dd921a-9ce7-313c-89d3-5cab519bfea8"><figcaption>Venus Williams will play in Auckland in January, aged 45 (Rob Carr)</figcaption></figure><p>Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams will play in January's Auckland's Classic at the age of 45, tournament organisers announced Wednesday.</p><p>Williams has been awarded a wild card for the Australian Open warm-up event from January 5-11 after only returning to the circuit in August at the US Open after a 16-month break.</p><p>"She is one of the great players in the modern era and her performances on the court speak for themselves," said tournament director Nicolas Lamperin, who added that she was in "remarkable shape and form".</p><p>"Off the court she has made an equally significant contribution to the game and to the development of female players worldwide," he said. </p><p>"Venus has had a profound influence on the evolution of women's tennis and has inspired the next generation with her unshakeable passion for the sport."</p><p>Williams, who won the Auckland Classic in 2015 when she beat Caroline Wozniacki in the final, has lifted five Wimbledon singles titles, two US Opens and an Olympic gold, in Sydney in 2000.</p><p>Lamperin said it was a "privilege" to have Williams back at the tournament.</p><p>"All sports fans should take this opportunity to watch one of the sport's all-time greats in action."</p><p>Japan's four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka was also announced as a confirmed entry for the tournament.</p><p>The Australian Open begins in Melbourne on January 18.</p><p>bes/sft/dh</p>)
